Understanding Audio Production Involves

If you are interested in audio production careers, you want to know where you should start. It is important to know that the road to audio production can be rough. But, although it can be a grind, it is quite rewarding.

Audio production is focused on recording audio and editing it to make it sound a certain way. An audio engineer performs audio production, in charge of picking and positioning the microphones to ensure accurate capture of the sound. Audio production should not be used interchangeably with music production as the latter deals with the way the song flows and the instruments involved. Read to know the stages of audio production to get started:

Writing a Song

A strong song is the foundation of each of the stages of audio production. The song can only be good as its foundation, regardless of the number of cool samples you add. In this stage, it is important to get a great melody and have interesting lyrical ideas.

Arranging

This involves organizing the sections of the song, verse, introduction, chorus, and more. Songs should be built out with genre-appropriate backing track ideas. Different instrumentation should be used to make the track more interesting throughout the various sections. Those on a budget can use virtual instruments and synths. When playing live instruments, it is important to use a decent mic and audio interface or a recording studio.

Recording

In this stage, the dope song and its solid arrangement are brought to life. This is when the mic is put to voice, cable in guitar, and virtual instruments into the song. Although some songwriting adjustments may take place during this stage, recording is more like assembling a song creatively. The music can be created live and some parts can be redone when they have to be tighter.

Editing

Right after recording, it is essential to edit the tracks to continue recording. Full-stage editing occurs after wrapping up recording. This is when the best takes of all instruments are picked and spliced together.  This stage involves adjusting pitches are that are off and adding crossfades.

Mixing

In this stage, audio producers take a dry track and make it sound professional and vibrant. They make all the instruments sound good together using things such as reverb, EQ, compression, audio plugins, and delay. It is important to have a good mix so listeners can clearly hear all the instruments.

Mastering

Mastering is the final chance of an audio producer to shine up a song. They make the song louder to meet industry standards and ensure coherence in songs on an album. Also, this stage involves making sure the instruments keep their original recorded and mixed sounds.
